The formal menswear collection by Chenert is created for a BA third semester menswear project at Via Design University College. The formal menswear aspect is analyzing different eras of formal menswear over time. The era that the author chooses to dissect is the 80´s and early 90´s of the New York underground Ballroom scene, where most of the people from the LGBTQ+ community came together to compete in different ball categories.
The formal aspect of the collection is blended together with an author's personal inspiration, which mainly came from his own queer upbringing in Estonia, the paintings and artworks by the famous 80's painter Jean Michel Basquiat, and some nude photographs by the 80´s photographer Robert Giard. The collection is created by using leftover materials, production waste, or recycled fabrics.
